For my podcast I was inspired to delve further into the world of designers and look at them from a humanistic angle. Having already looked at the creative process in my short film ‘The Girl Behind the Dress’ I looked at the link between creativity and depression. The media seems to give fashion designers a rather tragic fate. High profile designers such as Alexander McQueen, John Galliano and Yves Saint Laurent have all been reported as having various forms of mental illness and this is subsequently how we see all designers.
Through my podcast I looked at the opinions of the designers themselves. I hoped to find out if their opinion differed from that of people outside the industry. I went out to collect my vox-pop from the design studio at my university which I think added an appropriate background noise to the piece. Due to the slight reluctance of some to participate, the sound quality is slightly unclear.
To keep this piece newsworthy, I linked it in with the announcement of the Vauxhall Fashion Scout scheme opening up applications for the 2013 season. For my interview I wanted to follow the same topic but get a different opinion, that offered more objective fact than subjective thoughts. For this I decided to interview a therapist. I asked her about the generalised link between creativity and depression as well as looking at specific examples.
Overall, I was not as pleased with my audio pieces compared to my documentary. I believe that this was due to my lack of experience within the field of audio. For the future I believe a way I could improve my quality of work is through research. Mostly listening to podcasts that relate to art and fashion. It would also be useful for me to get a better grasp on the editing software I used. I felt due to my inexperience I could not get the best out of my material through editing.
The only redeeming feature throughout my audio was the pace of my podcast. I felt through the use of music and the blend of my narration and a vox-pop that the piece was well structured. I feel as though there was not enough within my interview and vox-pop to create its own story. If the two were linked together in a longer piece with a voice over to narrate it I feel as though the piece would make more sense.
